Proposal
Project Rationale
To construct a versatile framework for our interactive CD ROM that is applicable to a wide spectrum of content.
Targeted at preschoolers from the age of 3 to 5 years old, our CD ROM will be a combination of 2D storytelling and interactivities which encourages parent and child to share their computer experiences together.
With this CD ROM we aim to impart some common moral values and safety reminders and cultivate decision making skills to the young users with appropriate guidance from their parents.
Project Proposal
The subject that we are exploring is the use of 2 dimensional animations to combine storytelling and interactivities. Targeting at preschoolers from the age of 3 to 5 years old, this interactive story aims to instill morale values often taught in fairytales that are gradually losing their appeal to Singaporean kids with the invasion of quirky cartoon characters such as Sponge bob Square Pants, I am Weasel etc.
Reading from printed books is passé and often deem as impractical by technology savvy young parents. They feel that books takes up space, turn yellow and command very little repeated viewings. Though still in great demand, cartoon VCDs & DVDs are slowly being replaced by the latest fad in the market, the electronic books. These humongous looking books, read out the exact sentence where you tap your fingers at. However there is an obvious lack in interactivities.
Statistics has shown that in year 2004, 70% of the Singapore population owns a personal computer and 57% uses the internet regularly, up by 6% from 2003. From the statistics, we can reasonably predict that Edutainment CD ROMs for children will be the way to go as computer ownership continues to escalate.
By intertwining several famous fairytales of all time, we aim to impart some common moral values and safety reminders to the preschoolers. In the interactive story, we also want to cultivate decision making skills, by letting them make decisions in the story. They will be able to see the consequences if undesirable decisions are made.
Target user
At the tender age of 3 to 5 years old, these children love stories. They listen attentively to them and retell them.
Children in this age group are ready for more complex graphics and storylines. Younger children can’t follow plots and may get impatient.
Project Details
Architecture and Environment - Software
3D Studio Max, Macromedia Flash, Director, Freehand, Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, After Effects and Corel Painter.
Implementation Issues and Challenges
As we using a number of software for the interactive CD ROM, one of the difficult challenges anticipated will be the compilation of the different videos together in layers that will make up the scenes in the animation. We need to find ways of integrating the materials done with the various software to create the desired product for the target user.
The other challenge anticipated will be the time required to do the animation clips for the story. As we have decided to use 2D drawings for the animating, it will be rather time consuming to draw a certain amount of frames for a good animation. Colouring of the frames will be the most time consuming production of the animation portion as we only have limited manpower in this area.
Deliverables
The project will produce an edutainment Interactive CD ROM that are compatible to most computer platforms and an activities (day to day) journal/folder.
Besides the CD ROM, an activities (day to day) journal/folder will be available for off-screen participation.
The CD ROM will consist of
+ an interactive game of the Lil’red Hood
+ an animated story of 3 little pigs
+ 3 flash games
+ wallpapers (desktop)
+ animation clips
+ gallery (pictures)
